IMPORTANT UPDATE
The book described here has been accepted for worldwide publication by Jessica Kingsley Publishing of London, UK. It will be distributed in New Zealand by Footprint Books, an Australian distributor.
The title of the book has been changed to
A Beginners Guide to the Autism Spectrum Disorders: Essential information for parents and professionals.
by Paul G Taylor
Also some minor changes to the text of the book have been made.
This is because the new classification system proposed in the DSM-5 will replace the term Pervasive Developmental Disorder with Autism Spectrum Disorder
In addition the new system proposes to abandon the existing sub-groups of PDD-NOS and Asperger syndrome.
By reading this book you will learn about
Definitions ...... what exactly are we talking about?
How to recognise when somebody has autism spectrum disorder (or PDD, or Aspergers)
How to reset your thinking about what is going
on in autism spectrum disorder
The hidden reality that explains much of what
goes wrong in the life
of someone who has autism spectrum disorder
How to start making better assessments of what autism spectrum behaviours
are telling us
18 practical ways in which you can make life
easier for the person with PDD
and for
yourself
How to use these strategies in the classroom as
well as in the home
How to know what will not work and feel OK about
it
- and so much more
Some unsolicited comments about this book:
First let me congratulate you on writing such a great little book and secondly on getting it printed so people like myself can learn and educate others from it. My copy arrrived today and I am happily reading it for a second time and mentally making a list of who else I know that really needs to read it. A.P. - Hokitika, New Zealand
I wanted
to say that it was the book Ive been waiting for, but sadly
arrived too late
as the experience of my now 17yrs grandson
the UK school system echoed all of
the key mistakes highlighted in the book.
It is
readable, clear, without jargon and I am sure affirming for parents
(grandparents)
and teachers dealing with the difficulties of managing (in our
case)
a young person with Asperger syndromewho was gifted, funny, courageous
and tolerant of the adults who did not feel able to work with him
when his lack
of compliance and conformity was seen as willful and challenging.
The difficulty
and delay in reaching a diagnosis through educational psychology
(although
Aspergers was diagnosed by a clinical psychologist and paediatrician when he
was 11 yrs)
meant that his school was unable to access the finances to provide
special needs support
until he was 16 and in his final term of compulsory
education.
He is aware of how the system could not include him and admits that
he had a dreadful and lonely experience in education due to this.
Thankfully he
is now enjoying college and will be relieved and amazed
to find that this book
could have been a lifeline if available to teachers
and support staff who
wanted to support him but did not know how to.
Thank you
so much for writing this book.
It would be a wonderfully accessible book to sit
within University courses
in education and social care to alert students to the
pragmatic interventions with PDD in families with whom they will meet up.

Your book has to be winner. How I wish it had been there for me 12 years ago. With that thought in mind, I had a discussion with one of the Associations Senior Teachers this morning and would like to order some more copies so that all our Kindergarten Teachers and interested parents of Kindergarten children can have the opportunity to read and gather a wealth of clear and correct information regarding PDD. I am wanting to order 18 please. E.C. - Nelson, New Zealand
We have been talking about it a lot, and really respect your thoughtful, humane approach to such a complex subject. There is a lot in it, for everyone. C.C. - Gabriola, British Columbia, Canada
It is a very readable book and an excellent resource for us to share with parents. F.Y. - Richmond, New Zealand
I have read half the book and it is really good. I was using it for myself, to get a better understanding, especially of PDD NOS but also was hoping it would be useful for parents and teachers. It is very good and I am sure parents will really benefit from it. I am going to try and get the hospital to buy some to distribute. R.F. - New Plymouth, New Zealand
I thought you have done a brilliant job. The book was very parent friendly and had some great concepts for the parents. I actually thought it was very empowering for parents of children with this difficult condition. After reading this I realised it would be a brilliant resource for us to have at CDS to be able to lend to parents and kindergartens etc for them to browse before encouraging them to purchase their own copy to be able to refer to. T.G. - Nelson, New Zealand
Could I please have 4 more of your book "A beginners Guide to the pervasive Developmental Disorders" by Paul Taylor. I have found this book excellent for understanding these conditions and being able to support schools with children who have these difficulties. J.B. - Blenheim, New Zealand
I would like to order 8 copies of A Beginners Guide to the Pervasive Developmental Disorders. I have found the book so useful that I want to be able to loan it to parents, teachers and teacher aides. B.L. - Stoke, New Zealand
A useful resource for anyone with a person with ASD in their life. The section on anxiety is insightful and practical and articulates well what people on the spectrum may be experiencing C.F. - Nelson, New Zealand
If you do only one piece of professional development this year make sure you read this book. K.B. - Stoke, New Zealand
I would like to order 10 copies of A Beginners Guide to
the Pervasive Developmental Disorders. R.F. - New Plymouth, New Zealand
I bought this book on a whim to try and understand my daughters new diagnosis of PDD-NOS. I have to admit that I cried when I realized how much stress I was adding to her already little stressed out, anxiety filled life. The author not only gives incredible information about PDD but also takes the time to write short excerpts from the child's perspective. We have bought several copies of this book to pass around to our family members so that they will better understand our daughter and why we have totally changed the way that we interact with her. It is a quick read that you just can not put down. Family members do not mind reading it for the same reason. I can not say thanks enough to Dr. Paul G. Taylor for writing such a thoughtful book. You have changed our lives forever! A.B. - Review on Amazon (5 stars) Just wanted to say received and read the book - thanks very much. My amazing gorgeous son was diagnosed with Aspergers about 18 months ago and of all the reading I have done I have found your book the most straight forward and relevant. Everything you wrote about is applicable to my son (so much of what I have read elsewhere does not seem very pertinent as luckily he is a very capable/high functioning boy). Thank you - if anyone is ever interested in finding out more about my son then yours is definitely the book I would give them. I wish I could have given it to our GP and teachers he has had in the past and many other people that we have come across.... L.P. - Lower Hutt, New Zealand
I purchased this book after my child was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. It lives up to its title, as it is indeed a simple introduction. It gives a good understanding of what the Pervasive Developmental Disorders are about, while focusing on PDD-NOS. This would be a good book if your child has just been diagnosed and you have no idea about what this means to you and your child. If you already have some knowledge about the diagnosis, you may find the tone of this book condescending at times. However, it can still be a useful tool for family members or teachers that are not familiar with the diagnosis. C.D. - Review on Amazon (4 stars)
I found this easy to read and understand and so spot on with my sons behaviours. I am going to highlight specific pages and use it to give to family members, teachers, babysitters, etc to provide a quick and easy to read overview of problems and solutions for my child.
