Altorfer Publishing is a niche enterprise.
Altorfer Publishing plans to bring just a few selected books on child behaviour to the market.
These books will aim to meet the needs of
Parents and Teachers
who are concerned about how a particular child is behaving at home and in the classroom.
The first book in this series was published on 1 October 2009 and is about the
Pervasive Developmental Disorders
with a major focus on
PDD-NOS.
The Pervasive Developmental Disorders are a group of disorders in which there are impairments of
Reciprocal Social Interaction Communication Range of, or Intensity of Interests
The Pervasive Developmental Disorders include:
Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, and PDD-NOS (which stands for Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified).
PDD-NOS is becoming increasingly recognised and diagnosed. It is an important diagnosis because it so often explains behaviours that just don't fit our conventional ideas. Knowing that this is the diagnosis can be life-changing - Life-changing for the person with it and life-changing for those around him or her.
Latest U.S. research indicates that as many as 1 person in 100 may have PDD-NOS.
Many professionals use the umbrella term Autism Spectrum Disorder or Autistic Spectrum Disorder when they make any diagnosis within the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, including PDD-NOS.
This results in fruitless explorations in the autism literature by parents and teachers looking for information about PDD-NOS.
What is actually needed is something much more specific to PDD-NOS; Something written in simple plain easy to understand English.
This book is written by a practising paediatrician. He has a special interest in behaviour disorders in children and young people. His book concentrates mainly on PDD-NOS. It is written in simple plain English and is specifically designed for
Parents and Teachers
Some unsolicited comments on this book:
"I have just finished your draft and I do think it reads very well. Almost like a conversation. The style you have written in is very readable and I am sure a fantastic resource for teachers and parents. I look forward to being able to pass on a copy to the school." P.G. - Wellington, New Zealand
"First let me congratulate you on writing such a great little book and secondly on getting it printed so people like myself can learn and educate others from it. My copy arrrived today and I am happily reading it for a second time and mentally making a list of who else I know that really needs to read it." A.P. - Hokitika, New Zealand
"I wanted
to say that it was the book I’ve been waiting for, but sadly
arrived too late
as the experience of my now 17yrs grandson
the UK school system echoed all of
the key mistakes highlighted in the book.
It is
readable, clear, without jargon and I’m sure affirming for parents
(grandparents)
and teachers dealing with the difficulties of managing (in our
case)
a young person with Asperger’s syndromewho was gifted, funny, courageous
and tolerant of the adults who did not feel able to work with him
when his lack
of compliance and conformity was seen as willful and challenging.
The difficulty
and delay in reaching a “diagnosis” through educational psychology
(although
Aspergers’ was diagnosed by a clinical psychologist and paediatrician when he
was 11 yrs)
meant that his school was unable to access the finances to provide
special needs support
until he was 16 and in his final term of compulsory
education.
He is aware of how the system could not include him and admits that
he had a dreadful and lonely experience in education due to this.
Thankfully he
is now enjoying college and will be relieved and amazed
to find that this book
could have been a lifeline if available to teachers
and support staff who
wanted to support him but did not know how to.
Thank you
so much for writing this book.
It would be a wonderfully accessible book to sit
within University courses
in education and social care to alert students to the
pragmatic interventions with PDD in families with whom they will meet up."
C.M. - Durham, United Kingdom
"Your book has to be winner. How I wish it had been there for me 12 years ago. With that thought in mind, I had a discussion with one of the Association's Senior Teachers this morning and would like to order some more copies so that all our Kindergarten Teachers and interested parents of Kindergarten children can have the opportunity to read and gather a wealth of clear and correct information regarding PDD. I am wanting to order 18 please." E.C. - Nelson, New Zealand
We’ve been talking about it a lot, and really respect your thoughtful, humane approach to such a complex subject. There’s a lot in it, for everyone. C.C. - Gabriola, British Columbia, Canada
"It is a very readable book and an excellent resource for us to share with parents." F.Y. - Richmond, New Zealand
I have read half the book and it is really good. I was using it for myself, to get a better understanding, especially of PDD NOS but also was hoping it would be useful for parents and teachers. It is very good and I am sure parents will really benefit from it. I am going to try and get the hospital to buy some to distribute. R.F. - New Plymouth, New Zealand
I thought you have done a brilliant job. The book was very parent friendly and had some great concepts for the parents. I actually thought it was very empowering for parents of children with this difficult condition. After reading this I realised it would be a brilliant resource for us to have at CDS to be able to lend to parents and kindergartens etc for them to browse before encouraging them to purchase their own copy to be able to refer to. T.G. - Nelson, New Zealand
Could I please have 4 more of your book "A beginners Guide to the pervasive Developmental Disorders" by Paul Taylor. I have found this book excellent for understanding these conditions and being able to support schools with children who have these difficulties. J.B. - Blenheim, New Zealand
I would like to order 8 copies of “A Beginner’s Guide to the Pervasive Developmental Disorders”. I have found the book so useful that I want to be able to loan it to parents, teachers and teacher aides. B.L. - Stoke, New Zealand
A useful resource for anyone with a person with ASD in their life. The section on anxiety is insightful and practical and articulates well what people on the spectrum may be experiencing C.F. - Nelson, New Zealand
If you do only one piece of professional development this year make sure you read this book. K.B. - Stoke, New Zealand
I would like to order 10 copies of “A Beginner’s Guide to
the Pervasive Developmental Disorders”. R.F. - New Plymouth, New Zealand
I bought this book on a whim to try and understand my daughter's new diagnosis of PDD-NOS. I have to admit that I cried when I realized how much stress I was adding to her already little stressed out, anxiety filled life. The author not only gives incredible information about PDD but also takes the time to write short excerpts from the child's perspective. We have bought several copies of this book to pass around to our family members so that they will better understand our daughter and why we have totally changed the way that we interact with her. It's a quick read that you just can't put down. Family members don't mind reading it for the same reason. I can't say thanks enough to Dr. Paul G. Taylor for writing such a thoughtful book. You have changed our lives forever! A.B. - Review on Amazon
